As we enter the fall season, most of us think about the yummy scents to come. Pumpkin Pie, mulled wine, apple cider… It’s only natural for us want to bring these scents into our home with candles, soaps, lotions or room sprays.
Which brings me to the topic of Synthetic Fragrance.
It’s in virtually everything these days as companies care more about profits and less about our health and the environment. All those yummy fall candles you see mass produced on product shelving are most likely made with “toxic paraffin” wax and endocrine disrupting “fragrance”.
I double dog dare you to read the ingredient labels of your bath & body products, kitchen cleaners, bathroom cleaners, laundry detergent and softer, carpet deodorizers etc. Unless you’ve already schooled yourself on the dangers of synthetic chemicals, chances are you have at least 20 items in your home containing them.
Here’s a link to some easy read information about this subject http://www.naturalnews.com/033634_fragrance_chemicals.html
As you burn that fragranced candle, your breathing in toxins. Cancer causing toxins. Endocrine disrupting toxins.
But I really want that scented candle!
I might whip some up but in the mean time check your local healthfood store. Google it. They’re out there, and readily available.
Look to make sure the company uses high grade non-GMO vegetable (such as soy) wax. Make sure the scent comes from only natural sources, real herbs, spices, essential oils, absolutes or natural extracts.
Ever had your nose burn or start coughing while you’re cleaning the shower? That’s your body rejecting these chemicals. It’s alerting you to get away!
What can you do about it?
The easiest thing to do it TOSS them!
Clean on the cheap with baking soda, vinegar, salt, lemon juice, borax etc. Here’s some recipes: http://tinyurl.com/28cclo
